Restoration & Dry Rot Repair
Constant exposure to moisture poses a significant challenge for exteriors, often resulting in fungal growth that weakens wood structures. We meticulously remove damaged materials, restore your building, and ensure a seamless repair process through clear communication with our clients.
Our Restoration Process
Diagnosis
Identify root cause of the problem. Check for improper sealing or flashing of home that could cause dry rot to grow. Cearly communicate with the client about the underlying cause of the damage.
Preparation
Tarping off each individual workspace as needed to provide clean and dry working area. Diagnosis and removal of trim, moldings, flashings that show moisture, decay, and rot. Spraying underlying salvageable materials that show black mold to prevent future growth.
Redesign & Restore
If needed, redesign problem areas to properly route moisture away from home. Joining and rebuilding of underlying structural beams, osb, plywood, moisture sealing with tyvek, hardi-plank siding and trim. Trim and woodwork to be designed, fabricated and installed to match.
Seal & Paint
Sealing and reinforcing of surfaces, sanding if necessary to ensure flush and square fit of newly installed materials. Protect with proper sealing using caulking and mildew resistant paint to match trim and or body color of home.
Cleanup
Jobsite cleanup and final walkthrough inspection with client to ensure satisfaction.
F.A.Q.
What is dry rot, and how does it affect my property?
Improperly flashed and sealed areas of a home can often be exposed to prolonged moisture. This can cause dry rot (a fungus named Serpula lacrymans) to grow that will attack the fibers of wood-based building materials leading to a deterioration of the integrity of your structure.
How is dry rot treated and repaired?
We remove and replace all materials that show mold and rot and replace them as needed. Sometimes, re-designing these areas is a necessary step to properly route moisture away from the home. By keeping in close contact with our clients along the way and building a trusting relationship, we take care of this often difficult repair process smoothly and efficiently.
How much does dry rot repair cost?
The cost varies based on the extent of the damage and the materials needed. We provide a detailed estimate after a thorough inspection of the affected area.
Is dry rot covered by homeowners' insurance?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many insurance policies do not cover damage caused by long-term neglect, but it’s best to check with your insurance provider.
How can I tell if my home has dry rot?
Common signs include wood that appears cracked, shrunken, or has a spongy texture, as well as a musty odor and visible fungal growth; oftentimes black in color.
What materials do you use for dry rot repair?
We use high-quality, treated lumber specifically designed to withstand moisture and prevent future fungal growth. We also tightly seal with caulking and mildew resistant paint to protect newly installed materials.
How long does a typical dry rot repair take?
The duration of the repair depends on the extent of the damage but typically ranges from one to three weeks.
Can dry rot return after it has been repaired?
Proper repair is crucial. If the underlying moisture issue is not addressed, dry rot can recur. This is why we sometimes redesign problem areas to direct moisture away from the home to prevent future problems.
Will I need to vacate my home during the repair process?
Generally, dry rot repairs can be completed without the need for you to leave your home. However, this depends on the severity and location of the damage.
